Intelligent hospitals: looking into Aster Hospitals UAE’s utilisation of AI technology

The hospital maximised the technology’s potential to improve clinical workflows.

Hospitals and other healthcare facilities have had to fast-track their digital transformation journeys in recent times due to the impacts brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. Amidst challenges in operations and manpower, these facilities still had to ensure the swift and efficient delivery of health care.

In this regard, Aster Hospitals UAE embraced the latest technologies and integrated them into its operations to improve reliability. It is the first hospital in the country to use full AI-based closed loop transactions.

“We drive innovation, learning the process, replacing traditional big computers to document things. We introduced the PDA, handheld devices with the barcode scanning capabilities from Zebra Technologies, ibeacon detection capabilities, which are connected with the electronic medical records to get the doctors’ advice and validate when caregivers are transacting and giving the suggestions or preventing wrong practices,” the company said.

Amongst its innovation projects is the Workstation On Wheels (Wow), which is a mobile medical cart with a laptop mounted to allow easy access to the Hospital Information System (HIS) for feeding daily notes and other important updates related to the patient.

Aster Hospital embraced this update for more accurate and immediate documentation in HIS, to ensure no compromise between mobility and productivity, as well as a major reduction in paper-based records and increased information safety.

WoW helped the hospital solve difficulties faced during rounds and long durations in between entering the information into the EMR. It also addressed excessive paper usage for drug charts and doctors' progress whilst visiting patients in the wards.

The AI automation done by Aster Hospitals led to a reduction of patient waiting time, a reduction of patient complaints, a fast-track of clinician documentation, a reduction of insurance rejections, and a reduction of nonhuman-necessity tasks.

The company’s dedication to improving its services, as well as its pioneering of the latest technologies in improving clinical workflows with the guidance and support of our technology partner Techsys Technology, has been recognised by the Middle East Technology Excellence Awards. Aster Hospitals has bagged the win in the Automation - Healthcare category.
