PETRONAS wins triple at Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2024 for innovations in Oil, Gas, and Water sectors

PETRONAS distinguishes itself with cutting-edge technologies like ProAssure® Aqua, PrAnCorr, and ORCA, leading advancements in maintenance, analytics, and emerging technologies.

PETRONAS, Malaysia’s global energy group, has been recognised at the Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2024 for its groundbreaking contributions to the oil, gas, and water sectors. The company has clinched awards in three categories: Infrastructure Technology - Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO), Analytics - Oil & Gas, and Emerging Technology - Oil & Gas. These achievements highlight PETRONAS' commitment to innovation, sustainability, and excellence in leveraging technology to address industry challenges.

ProAssure® Aqua: A Leap in Leak Repair for the Water Industry

PETRONAS' winning entry for Infrastructure Technology - MRO, ProAssure® Aqua, is an innovative solution addressing the significant issue of Non-Revenue Water (NRW) in Malaysia. Building on the success of ProAssure® Wrap, this overwrap composite repair system is designed for the efficient and rapid repair of water pipelines. ProAssure® Aqua not only meets international standards, i.e. ISO 24817 and ASME PCC2, but also aligns with Malaysia’s Water Sector Transformation 2040 agenda, marking a significant step towards environmental sustainability and operational efficiency in the water industry.

Designed for live repair without the need for operational shutdowns, ProAssure® Aqua reduces downtime and offers cost-effective repair solutions and there is potential expansion to accommodate various pipe materials, enhancing its applicability across the water industry.

PrAnCorr: Predictive Analytics for Corrosion in Oil & Gas Pipelines

PrAnCorr, PETRONAS' entry for the Analytics - Oil & Gas category, utilises machine learning to predict internal and external metal loss in pipelines. This cloud-based innovation addresses the costly challenge of pipeline corrosion without the need for physical inspection, offering a cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional corrosion management practices.

It allows for early detection of corrosion, facilitating proactive maintenance, and incorporates machine learning for accurate prediction of corrosion impact. PrAnCorr has been enhanced with quality assurance features and direct reporting from the dashboard, with continual model retraining and user experience improvements on the roadmap.

ORCA Advanced Acoustic Emission Technology for Pipeline Integrity

PETRONAS’ ORCA technology, the winner in the Emerging Technology - Oil & Gas category, combines Ultra Long-Range Acoustic Technology (ULRAT) with Machine Learning (ML) for detecting metal loss in pipelines. This innovative approach offers a non-intrusive, efficient, and accurate method for pipeline integrity assessment, suitable for both onshore and offshore applications.

It provides extensive coverage for real-time corrosion monitoring without intervention and has been successfully tested and validated against field data, achieving high compliance with industry standards. ORCA aims to extend capabilities to detect dents and microcracks, addressing broader pipeline integrity concerns, with plans for certification and training module development to qualify inspectors and analysts.

PETRONAS' triumph at the Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2024 underscores its role as a pioneer in integrating technology into the oil, gas, and water sectors. Through innovations like ProAssure® Aqua, PrAnCorr, and ORCA, PETRONAS is not only enhancing operational efficiency and safety but also contributing to the advancement of Malaysia's infrastructure technology landscape. These technologies represent a significant leap forward in tackling industry challenges, positioning PETRONAS as a global leader in innovation and sustainability within the energy sector.
