Gamuda Engineering takes double win at the Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2022

Gamuda Engineering has scored a double success at this year's Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2022.

The engineering arm of Gamuda Berhad walked away as the winner of two award categories — Digital Engineering and Digital Industrial Construction for its foray into the Digital Industrialised Building Systems (IBS) sphere. The MTEA 2022, now in its 4th year, lauds outstanding companies that have made exceptional contributions to technological innovation in the country.

Leading the way in digitising the entire construction ecosystem, Gamuda Digital IBS is the first to revolutionise the nation's construction sector from a labour-intensive, dangerous and harsh environment to a sustainable digital ecosystem. It is anchored on cloud-based digital design, AI/IoT integrated robotic production and a Lego-like clean construction. The digital IBS ecosystem brings forth greater productivity, accuracy and efficiency, translating to enhanced values for homeowners.

Lim Hui Yan, Gamuda Engineering Executive Director, said the double win reaffirms the tremendous efforts of the Group despite the recent challenging years.

"Our successive wins cement our reputation of being at the forefront of empowering the industry for the better. The Malaysian construction industry has always played a significant role in the nation's development through socio-economic improvements. We are in a sector where we can influence sustainable infrastructure through greener planning, digital construction and talent development. As a Group, we stand for what we genuinely believe which is to bring out the best in digitisation via talent and technology. Winning these awards is gratifying as it’s a testament to our local talents’ capabilities in innovation." said Lim.

Leveraging 46 years of industry experience, Gamuda learned that successful digitalisation is not about purchasing off-the-shelves solutions with fancy technical jargon but integrating and translating technology to actual use cases that enhance values to the stakeholders and the ecosystem. The digital ecosystem Gamuda Digital IBS innovated has successfully upskilled the local community instead of relying on foreign labourers and created attractive job opportunities for younger generations. More than 600 youths and 200 professionals have benefitted from Gamuda’s BIM Academy, which collaborates with several local colleges to establish IBS courses for professionals to ensure a steady pipeline of talent to serve the growing construction industry in Malaysia.

Gamuda Engineering is highly applauded for its BIM maturity and is the first contractor in Malaysia to receive the prestigious BSI (British Standard Institution) Kitemark™ certificate for Design, Construction and Commissioning. One recent development is BIM-Augmented Reality (BIMAR) – an in-house developed application that allows real-world visualisation of BIM design models on-site using augmented reality technology. This innovative application has radically enhanced overall operations' quality and safety aspects with its interactive and tangible means of visualisation. With greater flexibility in design, faster construction, and superior quality finishing – such has inverted the dated perspective of what IBS can do in Malaysia.

Gamuda Digital IBS has made great leaps with the establishment of a fully digital construction ecosystem. Gamuda IBS has successfully delivered more than 5,000 homes and remained resilient throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.  Its precise innovation has recorded an unprecedented success in a safer construction method with almost no construction wastage; 30% faster construction, 30% enhanced productivity and 65% reduction in reliance on low skilled foreign labour. It produces consistent robot-built quality with absolute precision for homes with minimal maintenance required post-installation.
